SUMMARY:Protecting Monarchs and Other Pollinators in Your Community
DESCRIPTION:Join Angela Laws\, Endangered Species Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society\, for this webinar hosted by the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation. Angela will discuss the reasons that pollinators like monarchs are declining and highlight the many actions we can each take to protect monarchs and other pollinators in our communities. \nMore details/register here

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Land Use Change Impacts on Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity across the globe and throughout the tree of life is in major flux\, and understanding the nature and causes of these changes is critical for developing effective conservation and management strategies. Pollinators are an especially important group to understand biodiversity change in\, given the ecosystem and agricultural services that they provide\, and bumblebees are a particularly important group of wild native pollinators found across North America and Europe. Over the last few decades\, many species across this group have been declining\, with links being made to climate change and habitat loss as the culprits. Join Peter Soroye\, Conservation Biologist\, to learn about his PhD research\, looking at many species across multiple continents to explore how climate change has affected North America and European bumblebees over the last 120 years\, and how human land use and habitat loss change that relationship. \nMore details/register here

SUMMARY:Bat Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:Bat Week is an international\, annual celebration designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation. Bats are amazing creatures that are vital to the health of our natural world and economy. Although we may not always see them\, bats are hard at work all around the world each night – eating tons of insects\, pollinating flowers\, and spreading seeds that grow new plants and trees. \nLearn more!

SUMMARY:MJV: Recovery of the monarch butterfly: Federal and state legislation that can provide hope for this iconic animal
DESCRIPTION:Monarch butterflies are one of North America’s most iconic animals. Weighing less than a penny\, monarchs can fly up to 3000 miles from summer breeding grounds to overwintering sites in Mexico and have captured the imagination of generations of people as one of our largest and most striking butterflies. Unfortunately\, North American monarchs are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss\, pesticide use\, disease and climate change. Scott will discuss both current and proposed legislation that could help to protect and restore habitat for the monarch butterfly. \nMore info/Register here.

SUMMARY:Considering Root Traits for Improved Native Plant Development and Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Trait-based ecology aims to link specific plant traits\, or characteristics that affect fitness\, to community assembly\, biodiversity\, and ecosystem function. Trait-based approaches are increasingly being used to understand plant establishment and survival in restoration settings. In this talk\, I will discuss how considering plant traits can improve plant selection for revegetation of systems threatened by drought or competition. I will focus on early seedling and root traits\, as they hold great promise for better understanding plant establishment and survival in stressful systems. \nMore details/ register here

SUMMARY:Virtual Mind Walk: Searching for Fossils – Paleontological Sites of San Luis Obispo County
DESCRIPTION:Take a virtual field trip locally\, traveling eastward along Highway 58 in San Luis Obispo County. The route follows a geological transect spanning tens of millions of years\, a ‘slice in time’. Reconstruct ancient shorelines of an inland sea and subsequent mountain uplift of the granitic and sedimentary rock formations along fault zones within the present day Coast Ranges. Examine shell fossils embedded in ancient marine sandstones and shale outcrops along the field trip route\, and evidence of the Ice Age mega-fauna that roamed this area long ago. \nMore details/ register here

SUMMARY:8th Annual CEATI Vegetation Management Conference
DESCRIPTION:Power utilities and their customers are consistently asking far more of transmission and distribution vegetation management programs than in the past. A great deal of data is critical to support a utility’s vision. Investigation will continue into current technologies for data gathering\, ascertaining how data can be leveraged\, and perhaps most importantly\, how it can be transferred between the owner and third parties for work management. Data gathering is the critical first step\, and undertaking it efficiently is essential. The second natural step is collecting pertinent information and sharing it digitally\, and many paperless applications are being developed to ensure its effective use\, often resulting in real-time reporting. \nWho should attend: Electric Utilities\, Consultants\, Equipment Vendors\, Research Facilities and Laboratory Personnel\, Academics \nMore info/Register here.

SUMMARY:New Trajectories for Binational Restoration Partnerships: Science-based and Diplomacy Mechanisms for the Restoration of the Colorado River Delta
DESCRIPTION:After a century of water development under a legal framework that did not recognize nature as a legitimate water user\, the Colorado River today rarely flows to the sea\, and its 600\,000 ha delta ecosystem has been reduced to a mere 10% of its original size. Environmental NGOs from the United States and Mexico have worked together for nearly two decades to restore riparian and wetland habitats and re-establish a modest connection between the flowing Colorado River and the Upper Gulf of California\, for the benefit of nature and people. During this webinar\, there will be a will replay of a keynote presentation from the Society of Ecological Restoration conference 2021 and then host a live Q&A with presenters Jennifer Pitt and Osvel Hinojosa-Huerta. \nMore details/ register here
