SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Monarch Joint Venture (MJV) - Tri-National Monarch Butterfly Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Tri-National Monarch Butterfly Conservation \nTuesday\, April 23\, 2024 \n1:00PM – 2:00PM CDT \nRegister now! \nThis webinar has three parts: \nMonarch butterfly conservation in Canada presented by Dr. Greg Mitchell\, Environment and Climate Change Canada: Dr. Mitchell will discuss the current listing status of monarch butterflies in Canada as well as monitoring\, research\, and stewardship activities specifically carried out or supported at the federal level. Dr. Mitchell will also touch on the listing process for species at risk in Canada\, specifically as it relates to the monarch butterfly. \n\nU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\’s Center for Pollinator Conservation Update presented by Mara Koenig\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\’s Center for Pollinator Conservation: Prioritizing actions for conserving pollinators can be difficult\, and communicating it can be even more so. The term \’pollinator\’ itself implies thousands of different species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\’s Center for Pollinator Conservation recognizes there is overlap. The Center wants to work as a collective community on shared efforts that can make it much simpler and expand efforts to move forward. \n\nMonitoring the Overwinter Colonies\, Conservation of Monarchs in Mexico presented by Adriana Valera of WWF Mexico: History of Monarch butterfly conservation in Mexico since the discovery of the overwintering sites to the conservation activities WWF is developing in the present. \n

SUMMARY:Williamsburg\, VA Pollinator Palooza
DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Palooza \nThursday\, June 20 (First Event)/Saturday\, June 22 (Second Event) \n10:00AM-12:00PM CDT (First Event)/8:00AM-10:00AM (Second Event) \nVeterans Park\, Williamsburg\, VA \nThere is no registration for this event. Anyone who visits the event location can participate. \nDuring National Pollinator Week\, June 17–23\, 2024\, Master Gardener volunteers will present a Pollinator Palooza with two special events. These events are not only educational but also fun-filled and designed to raise awareness of pollinators\’ benefits in an engaging way. The first event\, on Thursday\, June 20\, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, is a children\’s extravaganza featuring crafts\, giveaways\, and a scavenger hunt. The second is on Saturday\, June 22\, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. and will host exhibits by the Butterfly Society\, Monarch Watch\, Williamsburg Area Beekeepers\, and Native Plant Society. Stop by for a visit. Learn about pollinators and see this beautiful garden for yourself. \nThe Native Plant Pollinator Garden in Veterans Park/Kidsburg\, at 3793 Ironbound Road\, came to life in 2021 and has become a testament to the power of gardening education and the value of collaboration. This transformation from a one-acre expanse of grass into a thriving habitat was made possible by the James City County Williamsburg Master Gardener Association\, James City County Parks and Recreation\, the Clean County Commission\, and a generous grant from Dominion Energy\, with the active participation and support of our community. \nThis garden serves a purpose beyond its aesthetic appeal. It raises awareness about the pressing pollinator crisis and demonstrates the importance of biodiversity\, the value of our local ecosystem\, and the benefits of proper landscaping practices that can be replicated in a homeowner\’s own yard. \nThe success of the Native Plant Pollinator Garden at Veteran’s Park relies on our community\, which is encouraged to participate either individually or as part of a local organization. If you would like to volunteer and learn alongside our JCCW Master Gardeners while helping our pollinators\, please contact jccmgardener@yahoo.com. \nNational Pollinators Week is an annual event celebrated internationally to support pollinator health. Pollinators\, like insects and birds\, are essential organisms that help plants reproduce by transferring pollen from the male flower to the female flower.
