SUMMARY:Iowa Prairie Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:Our world is changing rapidly\, and the highly fragmented nature of Tallgrass Prairie will greatly reduce the ability of this ecosystem to respond to these changes. As a result\, the future of Tallgrass Prairie will depend heavily on our actions in the coming decades. The 2019 Iowa Prairie Conference\, with a theme of “Ensuring the Future of Prairie\,” will be held at Central College\, in Pella\, on August 8 to 10\, 2019. The Iowa Prairie Conference is open to anyone interested in prairies. Natural resource managers\, educators\, students\, and prairie enthusiasts will gather for education\, discussion\, field trips\, and networking opportunities. \nMore info/Register here \n

SUMMARY:EPA Webinar: Going Wild: The Conservation Co-benefits of Green Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:1:00 – 2:30 PM\, EDT \nImpervious surfaces such as sidewalks\, roofs\, streets\, and parking lots are ubiquitous throughout the built environment. Stormwater runoff originating from these surfaces is a significant source of water pollution\, and the impact of that pollution creates repercussions that ripple beyond the human sphere. Wildlife that depend on clean\, abundant water resources—including species that are of recreational and economic value—cannot thrive in contaminated water bodies. Green infrastructure offers tools that can manage stormwater runoff\, improve water quality for wildlife\, restore wildlife habitat to the built environment\, and invite beneficial species such as pollinating insects\, birds\, and fish back to the places we live.  \nIn this webcast\, Mark Grey with the Seattle’s Clean Lake Union and Rebecca Masterman with the University of Minnesota’s Bee Squad will discuss how green infrastructure practices can restore wildlife habitat to the urban landscape and improve water quality for both humans and wildlife alike. \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:International Monarch Monitoring Blitz
DESCRIPTION:The International Monarch Monitoring Blitz aims to provide a valuable snapshot for scientists of monarch population status across the monarch migration paths in Canada\, Mexico\, and the United States. \nThe Blitz is an initiative from the Trinational Monarch Conservation Partnership\, created through the Commission for Environmental Cooperation. \nEach country has something to learn from monitoring monarchs during the same time period\, and comparing these observations year-to-year. Observations reported in Canada and the northern United States provide scientists with a snapshot of the peak breeding monarch population and the presence of milkweed. Reports from the southern United States document whether early migration and breeding are occurring. Data collected in Mexico document any monarch breeding taking place in traditionally migratory areas. \nMore info here

SUMMARY:MJV: Webinar: Integrating Social Science into Strategic Monarch Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Presenters:  \nChristine Browne Ph.D.\, Conservation Social Scientist\, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service\nLex Winter\, Environmental Social Scientist\, The Field Museum \nEvery corner of the landscape that the monarch butterfly navigates is shaped\, to some degree\, by humans. While this has resulted in a variety of obstacles for monarchs\, people are striving to create or maintain habitat for these charismatic creatures. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center have been working to understand the social\, political\, and economic factors that produce environmental threats\, and foster those that benefit monarchs and their habitats. In this webinar\, USFWS Human Dimensions Team Lead Christine Browne will explain how these factors within the socio-ecological systems have been identified and considered in the development of conservation strategies\, and Field Museum Social Scientist Lex Winter will share research on how these factors play out on the ground in urban and suburban areas in the Midwest. \nTo register click here.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Habitat Council: Fired Up! Using Prescribed Fire in Your Habitat
DESCRIPTION:June 19\, 2019 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EDT \nFire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology. The human tendency to suppress fire can sometimes allow invasive plants to out-compete native grasses and flowers\, therefore reducing plant and animal diversity. Prescribed burns\, also known as controlled fires\, can be a valuable tool in habitat management and restoration. In this webinar\, learn how several WHC-certified programs successfully use prescribed fire to manage and restore native habitat. \n  \nMore info here \nRegister

SUMMARY:Natural Areas Association: Insect Apocalypse? What Is Really Happening\, Why It Matters and How Natural Area Managers Can Help
DESCRIPTION:Jun 18\, 2019 12:00 PM in Eastern Time \nWebinar: \nThough they are indisputably the most important creatures on earth\, invertebrates are in trouble. Recent regional reports and trends in bio-monitoring suggest that insects are experiencing a multi-continental crisis evident through reductions in abundance\, diversity and biomass. Given the centrality of insects to terrestrial and freshwater aquatic ecosystems\, and the food chain that supports humans\, the potential importance of this crisis cannot be overstated. \nScott Hoffman Black will explain the latest science on insect declines and highlight important ways natural areas managers can incorporate invertebrate conservation into their land management portfolio. \n  \nMore Info/Register here
