SUMMARY:MJV Webinar: The Florida Monarch Population
DESCRIPTION:Presenters:   \nJaret C. Daniels\, Ph.D.\, Curator and Program Director\, McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity\, Florida Museum of Natural History \nMany efforts to enhance monarch recovery have focused on priority regions including California\, along the I-35 corridor from Texas to Minnesota\, and in the agricultural Midwest. Expanding the geographic focus to the Deep South\, including Florida with its unique monarch populations and often equally unique issues\, is needed for effective conservation planning. This webinar will provide an overview of the monarch populations in Florida\, some of the unique issues facing Florida monarchs\, and key takeaways from recent studies addressing long-term trends\, roadside habitat\, and the proliferation of commercially available non-native milkweed. Additional information will be provided on a few collaborative initiatives planned or underway. \nTo register click here.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Habitat Council: Easy Steps to Start Using Drones to Manage Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EST \nMonitoring for invasive species is an important aspect of habitat management\, but can be challenging on large or inaccessible areas. Drone imagery can save many man-hours of survey time\, typically done on foot\, and often in remote areas. Their ability to fly slow and low provides high quality imagery and information in a very site-specific manner. Join us on this webinar to learn how the latest in drone technology can facilitate remote monitoring for invasive species. \nYou’ll learn: \n\nHow to use new drone software and cameras for remote monitoring of invasive species\nWhat data you can expect to gather when using drones for monitoring\nHow to use the data to make informed decisions about invasive species management\n\nMore info/Register here.

SUMMARY:MJV: Monarchs in the Rough: Creating Habitat on Golf Courses
DESCRIPTION:2:00 pm EST \nPresenters: \nMarcus Gray – Audubon International \nDescription:\nTo combat the decline of monarchs and the decline of other key pollinators\, Audubon International and Environmental Defense Fund have teamed up to create Monarchs in the Rough in 2017\, a program that partners with golf courses to restore pollinator habitat in out-of-play areas. This program works to create essential habitat for butterflies and increase awareness of the golf sector’s contribution to the monarch conservation challenge. Additional sponsors and grant funding was received to scale conservation up to the landscape then continental level. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Managing Rural Roadsides for Pollinator Habitat
DESCRIPTION:1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EST \nLanark County is a rural municipality in eastern Ontario – to the west of Ottawa\, Ontario – managing approximately 600 kilometres of county roads. Since 2016\, Lanark County has followed an integrated vegetation management (IVM) plan to control invasive plants\, especially wild parsnip\, that encroach on pollinator habitat. In addition to controlling invasive plants\, the goal of the IVM plan was also to re-establish desirable native vegetation along roadsides. \nTo achieve these goals\, Lanark County changed mowing practices\, implemented integrated control measures to reduce impact to desirable vegetation (i.e. targeted spot spraying\, hand control of invasives\, reseeding disturbed sites\, etc.)\, and improved hydroseeding practices with native seed to promote pollinators. \nMore info/Register here

SUMMARY:EPRI TI- Webinar: Milkweed (Monarch) Detection- Satellite Data & Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:3:00 pm-4:00 pm EDT \nEPRI\’s expert\, Christian Newman\, will be hosting a webcast THIS Wednesday: Milkweed (Monarch) Detection- Satellite Data & Machine Learning. \nThrough EPRI’s Technology Innovation grants\, Mr. Newman has led work to consider\, New Frontiers in Milkweed Detection Evaluating the Potential of Satellite Data and Machine Learning.  \nThe ability to accurately and efficiently identify milkweed using satellite data could enable stakeholders and the electric power industry to make more effective decisions for listing as well for conservation and potential future regulatory compliance. This project assessed how this satellite data could be leveraged for identifying milkweed habitat. With sufficient and reliable data on known milkweed observation locations\, it would be possible to train machine learning models to automatically identify milkweed in new locations. \nThis project summarized current milkweed mapping methods\, collected milkweed location field data sets\, evaluated if milkweed could be found manually in satellite imagery\, and explored some machine learning techniques to identify milkweed from satellite imagery. \nJoin here.
