SUMMARY:MJV: The Beauty and Resilience of Prairie
DESCRIPTION:Prairies contain incredible beauty and diversity\, though neither is widely recognized by the public. Along with the size and connectivity of habitats\, the biological diversity in prairies creates the ecological resilience needed to help ensure their continued survival. This photo-heavy presentation will delve into the diversity of prairies\, especially within plants and invertebrates\, sharing incredible stories about species and their interactions with each other. Chris will also talk about how we can help prairies build and maintain their ecological resilience\, even in the face of increasing threats. Finally\, he will share some of the results of his year-long project to photograph as much beauty and diversity as he could within a single square meter of Nebraska prairie. \nMore info/Register here.

SUMMARY:Railway Tie Association: Environmental Regulatory Update: A Look Ahead
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will take a look at current and pending changes to environmental regulations\, as well as trends in state and federal policy and enforcement initiatives under the new Biden administration. Regulated industries can expect the new administration to consider action on several areas including chemicals regulation\, climate change\, wetlands\, environmental justice\, and air and waste management. Trump administration rules are expected to be rolled back and replaced with new Executive Orders and legislation. The webinar will also review the impact of Executive Orders that focus on environmental issues and how they may impact the industry. In addition to environmental regulation and enforcement\, the webinar will discuss the increasing attention to issues such as environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG)\, sustainability\, climate risk\, and renewable energy. Disclosure of ESG information has for some time been a voluntary\, market-driven process led by investors and shareholders. However\, with the Biden administration focus on climate change\, industries of all sizes can expect to see rules on mandatory ESG disclosures and climate risk reporting in the coming years.\n\n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:PV Plus: Amplifying the Sustainability and Biodiversity Benefits of Solar
DESCRIPTION:Demand for solar energy continues to accelerate. Signed power purchase agreements exceeding 70 GW will result in more than 500\,000 acres of new PV solar by the end of 2024\, with millions more acres to follow. But bare ground or turfgrass on solar facilities can contribute to the widespread decline in biodiversity\, causing new challenges to the sustainability of ecosystems and agriculture. \nIn this webcast\, forward-thinking energy advocates and buyers will tell how they are using procurement to accelerate innovation in the solar industry and realize additional environmental lift for their projects and brands. \nMore info here.

SUMMARY:MJV: Monarchs\, milkweed and grassland disturbance
DESCRIPTION:When common milkweed is cut back during the growing season it produces new growth over the next few weeks. Research suggests these regenerating stems are very attractive to ovipositing monarchs\, contain fewer monarch predators\, and may be safer environments for first-instar caterpillars. This presentation will review research on this topic\, including results from the ReGrow Milkweed for Monarchs community science project\, and discuss prospects and uncertainties around using disturbance as a conservation tool for monarch recovery. \nMore info/Register here.

SUMMARY:Xerces: Supporting Pollinators Over Time: How to Maintain Wildflower Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Integrating habitat onto farms and other landscapes can support pollinators and the pollination services they provide. However\, flower-rich plantings often require ongoing management to maintain wildflower diversity for pollinators over time. Come learn about a framework for selecting the most appropriate management techniques\, and learn how landowners Xerces work with are managing their pollinator plantings. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:AASHTO: Improving the Resilience of Our National Transportation System through Lifecycle Based Roadside Planning\, Design\, and Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Of all the land owned and maintained within the national highway transportation system\, up to two-thirds is unpaved. Historically roadside design and maintenance has prioritized research focus on traffic safety\, stormwater filtration and drainage\, and visual quality. However over the past several decades there has been research to show the roadside\’s potential as an environmental asset that if managed strategically\, can help improve system resilience and overall sustainability. Some of the most compelling recent research has shown potential for significant return on investment from management strategies to support pollinators\, sequester carbon\, and make the transportation system more resilient to fire. The TRB standing committee on Roadside Maintenance Operations (AKR20) has been coordinating with the standing committee on Landscape and Environmental Design (AFB40) for the past twenty years on the development of National Guidelines for Vegetation Management (AASHTO\, March 2011). This presentation will discuss the history of this research collaboration and the two committees\’ current NCHRP research proposal to establish a facilitated ongoing national dialogue on best management practices for management of highway transportation roadside assets. \nPresenters: \nScott Lucas\, Assistant Administrator for Maintenance Operations\, Ohio DOT \nRay Willard\, PLA\, State Roadside Asset Manager\, Washington State DOT \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nOr call in (audio only) \n+1 509-931-1572\,\,255554314#   United States\, Spokane \nPhone Conference ID: 255 554 314# \nFind a local number | Reset PIN

SUMMARY:MJV: Monarch Butterfly Reproduction: from physiology to behavior
DESCRIPTION:Reproduction is a fascinating facet in the life an insect with more than its share of fascinating features. Monarch scientists Karen Oberhauser and Michelle Solensky will share their research on the ins and outs of monarch reproduction\, from mating behavior to spermatophores and sperm competition. Learn how they’ve counted monarch sperm (both kinds!)\, distinguished female rejection postures\, and measured who wins in the inner battles among sperm. You just might come away from this talk thinking that monarch reproduction is just as fascinating as monarch migration! \n \nMore info/Register here.
