While habitat loss\, pesticide use\, and climate change all have something to do with it\, Dr. Avalon C. Evans of the Rowland Institute at Harvard University shows in this talk that light pollution is another important — but too often overlooked — bringer of the insect apocalypse. Light pollution interferes with the development\, movement\, foraging\, and reproduction of diverse insect species\, including many that we know and love such as fireflies. Fortunately\, there are many simple things that we can all do to help reverse this driver of insect declines. Light pollution can be cheaply\, easily\, and instantly eliminated\, and doing so can help ensure that we live in harmony with our insect friends and neighbors for generations to come. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. DESCRIPTION:2023 International Conference on Pollinator Biology\, Health\, and Policy \nJune 3-6\, 2023 \nThe Penn Stater Conference Center\, State College\, PA \nRegister here! \nThe Penn State Center for Pollinator Research is hosting the fifth International Conference on Pollinator Biology\, Health and Policy on  \nJune 3-6\, 2023\, with an optional evening welcome reception on Saturday\, June 3rd.  \nIt has been thirteen years since the inaugural International Conference\, and there have been significant advances in our understanding of the drivers of pollinator declines\, the tools to monitor and predict these declines\, and strategies to conserve and expand both managed and wild pollinator populations. Moreover\, it is clear that broader insect communities are experiencing similar challenges and can benefit from the strategies developed for supporting pollinators. The theme for this year\’s conference is understanding and leveraging networks to support pollinator health\, from gene networks to ecological community networks\, to scientific networks. \nOur keynote speakers for the conference are  \n\nMay Berenbaum – University of Illinois\, Urbana Champaign\nMichelle Flenniken – Montana State University\nDavid Inouye – University of Maryland & Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory\nAlexandra Klein – University of Freiburg\n\nPlease see the Speaker page for all of our fantastic speakers\, it will be updated as we confirm additional speakers. \nSymposium will cover a range of topics\, including mitigating the impacts of pathogens and parasites\, deploying integrated pest and pollinator management to conserve pollinators and their ecosystem services in diverse landscapes\, tools for monitoring and mapping biodiversity\, principles and practices for designing biodiverse communities\, and evaluations of the manifold impacts of climate change on pollinator and insect communities.
