SUMMARY:Lights Out for Fireflies and Other Insects
DESCRIPTION:Lights Out for Fireflies and Other Insects \nThursday\, May 11\, 2023 \n12:00PM-1:00PM \nRegister here! \nInsect populations around the world are declining rapidly. But why? While habitat loss\, pesticide use\, and climate change all have something to do with it\, Dr. Avalon C. Evans of the Rowland Institute at Harvard University shows in this talk that light pollution is another important — but too often overlooked — bringer of the insect apocalypse. Light pollution interferes with the development\, movement\, foraging\, and reproduction of diverse insect species\, including many that we know and love such as fireflies. Fortunately\, there are many simple things that we can all do to help reverse this driver of insect declines. Light pollution can be cheaply\, easily\, and instantly eliminated\, and doing so can help ensure that we live in harmony with our insect friends and neighbors for generations to come. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. Closed Captioning will be available during this webinar.

SUMMARY:2023 International Conference on Pollinator Biology\, Health\, and Policy
DESCRIPTION:2023 International Conference on Pollinator Biology\, Health\, and Policy \nJune 3-6\, 2023 \nThe Penn Stater Conference Center\, State College\, PA \nRegister here! \nThe Penn State Center for Pollinator Research is hosting the fifth International Conference on Pollinator Biology\, Health and Policy on  \nJune 3-6\, 2023\, with an optional evening welcome reception on Saturday\, June 3rd.  \nIt has been thirteen years since the inaugural International Conference\, and there have been significant advances in our understanding of the drivers of pollinator declines\, the tools to monitor and predict these declines\, and strategies to conserve and expand both managed and wild pollinator populations. Moreover\, it is clear that broader insect communities are experiencing similar challenges and can benefit from the strategies developed for supporting pollinators. The theme for this year\’s conference is understanding and leveraging networks to support pollinator health\, from gene networks to ecological community networks\, to scientific networks. \nOur keynote speakers for the conference are  \n\nMay Berenbaum – University of Illinois\, Urbana Champaign\nMichelle Flenniken – Montana State University\nDavid Inouye – University of Maryland & Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory\nAlexandra Klein – University of Freiburg\n\nPlease see the Speaker page for all of our fantastic speakers\, it will be updated as we confirm additional speakers. \nSymposium will cover a range of topics\, including mitigating the impacts of pathogens and parasites\, deploying integrated pest and pollinator management to conserve pollinators and their ecosystem services in diverse landscapes\, tools for monitoring and mapping biodiversity\, principles and practices for designing biodiverse communities\, and evaluations of the manifold impacts of climate change on pollinator and insect communities. Ongoing national and global initiatives in policy\, education\, and Extension will also be highlighted. \nThis conference will bring together individuals from universities\, government agencies\, industry\, non-profit organizations\, and several stakeholder groups to engage in a dialogue about the research\, management\, conservation\, and policy approaches needed to tackle these issues.  \nAbstract submission deadline will be September 15\, 2022. \nFor more information about the conference\, please contact the conference organizers\, Christina Grozinger (Penn State University)\, Michelle Flenniken (Montana State University)\, and Alex Klein (University of Freiburg). For conference logistic and registration questions\, please contact Erin Reed. This conference is supported by Penn State\’s Center for Pollinator research – http://ento.psu.edu/pollinators – Department of Entomology\, College of Agricultural Sciences\, and the Huck Institute of Life Sciences.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Week 2023
DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Week 2023 \nJune 19-25\, 2023 \nLearn more here! \nPollinator Partnership is excited to announce that the official Pollinator Week website has been updated and is now live! Pollinator Week will take place June 19-25 this year. Visit our website to download the official 2023 Pollinator Week logos and social media graphics\, register your activities on the new event map\, and download our toolkits and educational resources. \nThis Pollinator Week we will be emphasizing the connections between climate and pollinators. Pollinator populations are decreasing because their food and homes are disappearing\, diseases have increased\, and rising temperatures and natural disasters are affecting their ability to survive – all of which are related to climate change. These are big problems and the efforts that are made around North America and globally during Pollinator Week raises awareness for conservation and can help provide real solutions for the pollinators we all love.

SUMMARY:WHC: From Pest to Pesto: Four Invasive Species You Can Eat!
DESCRIPTION:WHC: From Pest to Pesto: Four Invasive Species You Can Eat! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTue\, Aug 29\, 2023 \n12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CDT \n\n\n\n\nRegister for the webinar HERE! \nInvasive plant and animal species can have a devastating effect on ecosystems\, as they outcompete native species for resources and proliferate without any natural predators or controls. Not only do invasive species pose a threat to biodiversity — with 42% of threatened or endangered species at risk because of invasives — but they can also create safety issues for employees and community members. Removing invasive species allows native species to thrive and restores the balance of the ecosystem – but once you’ve hand-pulled those invasive weeds or netted that invasive fish\, did you know you can eat some of them? In this webinar\, WHC staff will share several simple recipes incorporating invasive species found in various parts of the U.S. Learn how to reuse invasive plant and animal species in a way that is good for the environment — and your stomach! What you’ll learn: The importance of removing invasive species Tips for identifying potential invasives A few recipe ideas that utilize invasive plants and animals Who should take this webinar: Corporate conservation programs focused on removing invasive species People interested in foraging for invasive flora and fauna Anyone who wants to try an interesting new recipe Presenters: Erin Allegro\, Senior Manager\, Business Development\, WHC Abigail McBride\, Consultant\, WHC Melissa Scheiber\, Senior Manager\, Events\, WHC Megan Thomas\, Manager\, Content\, WHC
