Solar energy is rapidly being deployed across the U.S. At the same time, many pollinator populations have sharply declined across North America. The upcoming federal listing decision for the monarch butterfly may affect not only site development, but also ongoing operations and maintenance. The Nationwide Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances for Monarch Butterfly on Energy and Transportation Lands (Monarch CCAA) offers a potential solution. In exchange for voluntary conservation commitments, partners receive regulatory certainty and operational flexibility amidst the uncertainty of a possible monarch listing. This webinar will describe the Monarch CCAA, what is required to participate in it, and address how solar vegetation practices and land management can contribute to conservation through it. Considerations for the full lifespan of a project, plus management strategies and resources for supporting pollinator habitat on large-scale installations, will also be shared.
