EPRI’s expert, Christian Newman, will be hosting a webcast THIS Wednesday: Milkweed (Monarch) Detection- Satellite Data & Machine Learning.
Through EPRI’s Technology Innovation grants, Mr. Newman has led work to consider, New Frontiers in Milkweed Detection Evaluating the Potential of Satellite Data and Machine Learning.
The ability to accurately and efficiently identify milkweed using satellite data could enable stakeholders and the electric power industry to make more effective decisions for listing as well for conservation and potential future regulatory compliance. This project assessed how this satellite data could be leveraged for identifying milkweed habitat. With sufficient and reliable data on known milkweed observation locations, it would be possible to train machine learning models to automatically identify milkweed in new locations.
This project summarized current milkweed mapping methods, collected milkweed location field data sets, evaluated if milkweed could be found manually in satellite imagery, and explored some machine learning techniques to identify milkweed from satellite imagery.
