MJV Webinar: The Florida Monarch Population

December 17, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

Presenters:
Jaret C. Daniels, Ph.D., Curator and Program Director, McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, Florida Museum of Natural History

Many efforts to enhance monarch recovery have focused on priority regions including California, along the I-35 corridor from Texas to Minnesota, and in the agricultural Midwest. Expanding the geographic focus to the Deep South, including Florida with its unique monarch populations and often equally unique issues, is needed for effective conservation planning. This webinar will provide an overview of the monarch populations in Florida, some of the unique issues facing Florida monarchs, and key takeaways from recent studies addressing long-term trends, roadside habitat, and the proliferation of commercially available non-native milkweed. Additional information will be provided on a few collaborative initiatives planned or underway.
